What language should I learn, French or Spanish?

January 31, 2009 by admin

I am already bilingual and I want to be trilingual. I live in southern California but I am going to college on the East Coast and plan to study science. Would it be better to learn Spanish (because it is becoming more and more necessary in the US) or French (because I might use it in my career later on — they speak French in Europe and at CERN)?

both are latin languages, so a bit similar,

If you search a world language top 5, Spanish would be the best choice.
But if you’re planning to travel to Europe, French would be the best choice. If you’re not going to Europe, Spanish might be the best choice.

You know, I think Spanish is the one – it opens all of South America to you as well as many other areas incuding Spain.

Just a point to note ( you probably know anyway) that American Spanish is different in pronunciation, grammar, slang and so on than Castillian ( European) Spanish. If your future career will be US based, you’ll want to write ( and sound) like your main customers.

If you’re choosing an online course this might be an important consideration…and there is some information.

I would say Spanish, as it is rapidly growing in the world, especially in the United States. You will use it more often than French (at least that has been my experience). Also, the grammatical system, though similar to that of the French language, is more simple in Spanish and does not vary as much.
